As summer draws to an end and we get ready for the transition back to school, preparation this year is sure to look different from years past. Whether you are planning for your children to head back to in-person learning, fully digital learning, or a combination of the two, prepping for you and your children’s “new normal” can be difficult to navigate. We understand, and we wanted to share a few ways you can best prepare for the school year ahead!
Continue your back-to-school traditions (with slight adjustments). If you always take the kids shopping for back-to-school clothes and new school supplies, continue that tradition, even if it’s online. Even if they will be participating in fully digital learning, continuing habits and traditions that you have practiced in previous years will help make the transition into the new school year feel more familiar. Still take your traditional first day of school photos and, if you’re learning from home, create a new tradition that reinforces the positive side of the new normal like a mid-day dance party. Making this new routine a positive experience is a great way to get your kids excited for the upcoming school year!
Create a structured and inviting learning environment. Teachers do a great job of decorating and arranging their classrooms in fun and engaging ways because they know it affects how their students learn. Even if your child won’t be learning in the traditional classroom this year, you can still create a space at home that encourages learning and creativity. Setting up a desk like they would have in class will help your child recognize that this is the space where they get their schoolwork done. Encourage reading by having a bookshelf stocked with fun, age-appropriate books and create a reading nook with a fun rug and reading chair. If you have young children, try to actively participate in reading with them. If your children are old enough for independent reading, designate 30 minutes to an hour a day of reading. Incorporate exercise. Learning digitally can be very effective, but it can be difficult to make sure your child is moving and exercising throughout the day. Incorporating a fun family exercise in your day is a great way to help your children burn energy so they can be effective learners. Plus it gets the whole family involved! There are great options online for family-friendly workouts or you can incorporate a fun game or hobby like tennis or walking. Switch it up daily or every few days to make exercise fun and engaging!
