Choosing the Right Size Rug 

Once you know what rug trend suits your style best, it's time to select the right size rug for your space. A rug that is too small can look out of place and become a tripping hazard. A rug that is too large can overwhelm the space and cover the gorgeous flooring beneath. Here are a few basic tips for any room: 

• Measure the space to get an idea of what size rug you need. Common sizes include 5’x8’, 7’x9’, 8’x10’, and 9’x11’ for rectangular rugs and 4’, 6’, 8’, and 10’ diameter for round rugs. You can also customize a rug size if your space is a unique size. 

• Use painter’s tape to mark where the rug would fit in the room to get an idea on size and placement. This will save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run.

Living Room Area Rug Sizing 

• The front lefts of sofas and chairs should fit on the rug. 

• Aim for 6” of rug space on each side of the furniture.

• Keep 1’ of flooring between the rug and wall to avoid looking like wall-to-wall carpet. 

• For larger rooms, choose a rug that allows all 4 legs of sofas, chairs, coffee tables, and side tables to be on the rug.

Dining Room Area Rug Sizing

• Choose a rug that is large enough to fit all 4 legs of chairs, even when they are pulled out.

• Leave at least 24” of rug between the backs of chairs and the edge of the rug.

• If you have a round dining table, this is a great space to use a round rug. 

Bedroom Area Rug Sizing

• Select a rug that extends a foot from either side of the bed.

• For larger bedrooms, consider a rug that accommodates nightstands as well. 

• You can also incorporate a rug to the side of the bed in a sitting area.

• Use a runner along the side of an island. 

• For a smaller kitchen, a 2’ x 3’ rug in front of the sink is a good idea.
